Jose Varela started writing soon after he sold the Los Angeles Herald Examiner in the streets of Long Beach, California.  As he read the great columnists of the day he wanted to write stories and discuss issues of the day.   He would later write for his school newspaper, both in high school and college, honing skills that needed refinement but gave him a sense of the power of words.  

Poetry does not come naturally to Mr. Varela.  Most of it, quite honestly, is put together thoughts without much editing.  Hence the self publishing.  If he actually sought to publish, an editor would take out lots of things and turn him into something he is not.  He's just a word whittler who picks up the shavings and moves on to the next piece of wood.
